Ok, I first heard about hypermiling from my cousin G about a month ago.  He was telling me how average commuters can get up to 100 mpg on hybrids over 50 mpgs on regular cars.  Me being a fierce commuter, beltway slave, did not believe him one bit.  Then I did my research and found out more about hypermiling.  Ok, this blog isn’t about how to hypermiling works (do you own research) it’s about the results I’ve experienced since I started hypermiling.

My car (actually Dottie’s car) I’ve been using:  2000 Nissan Sentra, 124K miles

Sticker rating MPG City 23, MPG Highway 30, MPG Combined 26

I actually thought I’d be in the high 20’s combined … 26 MPG stinks!

I started hypermiling about a few weeks ago.  I studied and learned all the techniques, like a Jedi master.  On my first full tank of gas and after a tune up, I drove 457 miles and refilled 11.87 gallons of gas.  That puts my new MPG up to 38.5 MPG – SWEET!  Next rounds, 412 miles refilled 10.92 gallons = 37.72 MPG, 434 miles refilled 11.63 37.31 MPG!!!  I’m now averaging 37.84 MPG on this old skool nissan.  That equates to a 68% increase in gas efficiency.

Research on your own on how to hypermile.  My average commute is 72 miles round trip.  Hypermiling does add on about an extra 6 minutes to my commute, but big deal.

Now I’m just trying to figure out how it calculate the new price per gallon.
